10 Creative Ways to Support Dog Rescues and Give Back

From fundraising to fostering, here’s how you and your pup can help.

Adopting a rescue dog changes your life in ways you never imagined. Trust doesn’t happen overnight, but every tail wag, every gentle nudge, deepens the bond and becomes part of your story together. For many rescue dog owners, myself included, there’s a natural desire to give back - to do something, anything - for the countless dogs still waiting for their second chance.

Everyone has a different amount of time, energy, and skills to offer. I’m lucky that photography allows me to support rescue work by raising both awareness and funds, and it gives me the flexibility to foster. The food donation bin at our local Morrisons actually came about just because I was wearing a rescue-branded hoodie and someone asked me about it - it's amazing what small things can lead to.

However much time you have, and whatever your strengths, there are so many ways to support the rescue community. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

1. Use Your Talents for Good

Everyone has something they are good at or enjoy - writing, baking, crafting, organising events – you can then find a way to use that skill for rescue causes.

  • Baker? Make delicious treats (that you can trial on your own dog—I’m sure they won’t mind!) and either sell them yourself or donate them to a local rescue to sell at events. Most rescues attend or host companion dog shows to fundraise throughout the summer.
  • Crafty? Make and sell dog-themed items like bandanas, toys, or keyrings and donate a portion of the profits. These "Adopt me" bandanas I use on my foster dogs are amazing.
  • Social butterfly? Host a small fundraiser or awareness event at a local café or park.

2. Share Stories on Social Media

It may seem small, but sharing your rescue dog’s journey online can be powerful. You’re not just posting cute photos - you’re showing the world how rewarding rescue can be.

  • Tell your dog’s story from rescue to now.
  • Highlight local rescue organisations and their needs.
  • Join in on hashtag campaigns like #AdoptDontShop or #RescueDogLove.

3. Create a Gotcha Day Tradition

Each year on your dog’s Gotcha Day, celebrate by giving back in their honour.

  • Donate supplies (blankets, food, toys) to the rescue they came from.
  • Set up a birthday fundraiser on Facebook or Instagram for a local rescue.
  • Sponsor another dog as a gift to the rescue that changed your life. For example, Many Tears Animal Rescue offers a “Gift of Life” option where you can fund the cost of saving a dog.

4. Volunteer Your Time

Rescues are always looking for hands-on help, and appreciate any help you can offer:

  • Dog walking, bathing, or even just sitting with a nervous dog to help build trust
  • Transporting animals or collecting donations
  • Helping at companion dogs shows or fundraising stalls

Even just a few hours a month can make a huge difference.

5. Foster - Even Just Once

Fostering is one of the most direct and powerful ways to help. Giving a dog a temporary home frees up space in rescues and gives them a better shot at finding a permanent family as it enables their true personality to show outside of the stressful environment of kennels.

If you're not ready for a long-term commitment, many rescues offer short-term or emergency foster options.

6. Donate - But Make It Personal

Regular donations are incredibly helpful to rescues, but there are also more personal ways to give:

  • Ask your workplace to match your donation.
  • Buy something from a rescue’s Amazon wishlist or drop off essentials.
  • Cover the medical costs for a specific dog (many rescues will let you choose who you’re helping).

7. Tell Your Local Businesses About Rescue Dogs

Many people still aren't aware of how many amazing dogs are waiting in rescue. Encourage your local café, pub, or beauty salon to:

  • Display flyers or posters of adoptable pets.
  • Host a fundraising jar or awareness event.
  • Sponsor a local dog rescue event.

8. Join or Start a Rescue Walk

Sign up for a charity dog walk, or organize your own. It doesn’t need to be big - just you, a few friends, and your dogs out walking in rescue-branded bandanas can be a great awareness boost.

9. Help with Pet Photography or Design

If you’re into graphic design or photo editing, your skills could help create adoption posters, social media posts, or even revamp a rescue’s website.

Great photos and branding can dramatically increase adoption rates.

10. Keep Talking About It

Sometimes, the simplest thing you can do is keep the conversation going. Talk about why you chose to rescue. Share the challenges and the joys. Advocate gently, but clearly. You never know who might be inspired to adopt - or help - because of your story.

You + Your Dog = Change

Your rescue dog is more than just a companion - they’re a daily reminder that second chances are worth fighting for. Giving back doesn’t have to be big or complicated. Every post, every donation, every gesture makes a difference.

Because when you give back, you’re not just helping dogs - you’re paying forward the love that your rescue gave you.
